Big promotional efforts from one little fan!

When Jericho was cancelled and we were all fighting to get the show back, many of us listened to Shaun Omac Radio to hear the latest on the effort to save Jericho. Over the course of those three weeks we were able to speak to our heroes in the Jericho universe, by calling in with questions, encouragements, and thank yous.

One of my favorite reoccurfing moments was when a (then) 9 yr old girl named Shelby would call in to talk to our Jericho family. This sweet little fan has been one of the most prolific promoters in the fandom, and her motives are as pure as can be. She just loves Jericho, plain and simple. This love has led her to do incredible things from supporting our troops with Jericho DVDs, to visiting the set, where she made her trip about the fandom by getting autographs for raffles and special recorded messages for a few lucky fans.

Her site www.jericho4kids.com is chock full of incredible interviews, videos, and games. She is one of a kind, and I am very proud of her.

Shelby got an incredible opportunity this week when she was interviewed by the Kansas City CBS affiliate. Check out this story about an amazing little girl, and her family:

I was fortunate enough to meet Shelby when business travels took me near her home. This was a fun moment, just before we called Shaun’s show together when Michael Loomer was on:

Shelby, if you’re reading this, you’re the best, and I’m so glad you’re part of this fandom. Keep up the great work!

Send a Jericho Valentine!

Like many others, I got an email in my inbox yesterday from CBS with the following image in the body:

CBS_V_CARD.jpg picture by rubberpoultry

When you click on it, you are taken here: http://jerichovday.com/

You have the choice to send one of 3 cards. The one pictured above, and these two:

They are all very cool, and a great way to promote the show.

So now for the fan promotions spin…

I was almost immediately asked for a …wider… range of options because some of us are drawn to other love stories in the Jericho universe. I put these options together for those Heather and Jake, and Stimi fans. (you have to send them on your own though). Not as cool as the CBS option, but it’s something:

Regardless which option best suit you, this is a great opportunity to get the word out. With only a few days left until the premiere and Valentine’s Day on the way,  kill two birds with one stone with Jericho Valentines.

Jericho Meets Southpark- Avatars by Mr. Cosmic

For those new to message boards, an “Avatar” is your face in the virtual world. From pictures of sports team logos, to favorite Jericho characters, right down to floppy rubber chickens, avatars are a fun way to express yourself to others on the forums you visit.

Last night Jon Steinberg, co-creator of Jericho joined fans for an amazing chat in Jeritopia (a fan created and run chatroom). When the formal chat was over the subject of favorite movies and TV shows came up, and Jon said that he liked the irreverent, but often hilarious Comedy Central cartoon Southpark.

This immediately brought to mind the extremely well done avatars created by our very own Mr. Cosmic. If you’re a Southpark fan, you’ll love these, and even if you’re not, you’ll probably still love them. They are top notch! He’s got many characters within the Jericho universe, and the liknesses are so great.

They’re all great, but here are a few of my favorites:

Johsnton green

Many of these have been around for a long time, but incase you missed them, hop on over to Mr. Cosmic’s site, and add your favorite character to your profile today!

Bombwatcher's Amazing Video Signature Offer

Signature graphics have been popular on the CBS Jericho board for as long as it has been around. I’ve only been a community member for 10 months, and I know they’ve adorned the posts of many a user for that amount of time anyway.

I’ve seen some awesome designs along the way, but one Jericho artist has raised the bar for everyone, and the best part is that she’s taking requests!

Tracy-AKA bombwatcher, has recently begun capturing favorite fan requested scenes from Jericho and then converting them to signatures. The icing on the cake is that she adds in custom usernames (in really great fonts) for a custom style that is way beyond cool.

Here’s an example:

Remember Our Writers and Crew

While the excitement for season 2 is at a fever pitch, it’s easy to forget that our writers have been on strike for over 3 months. This has undoubtedly made things hard for them, below the line crew and their families as Hollywood has been practically shut down. There is almost no work to be found for most of the people we’ve come to care so much about.

If you’ve never thought much about the writers, consider this:

Everyone from executive producer and show runner Carol Barbee, right down to our beloved on set dresser Michael Loomer (and everyone in between) has been affected by this strike.

This weekend, the WGA (Writers’ Guild of America) negotiating team will present to it’s membership the deal that they’ve been working out with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers) over the last week or so. Some have speculated that a vote might take place at the Saturday meetings.

While the media would have us believe it’s over (I heard that last night on late night TV), it’s not over until the WGA members vote and approve the deal. It’s very likely that the negotiators have put together something that guild members will approve, but as they say… it ain’t over until it’s over!

Keep our writers, crew and their families in your thoughts and prayers over the weekend and weeks to come as this deal is being finalized. Their work has compelled us think of them as family, has made us come to care about each other, and while it’s wonderful to celebrate the premiere, let’s not forget those who made everything we’ve been doing for the last 10 months possible.

Creating Jericho Promo Images- Tips and Tricks

Have you every wondered around the various Jericho fan forums and wondered how all of the wonderfully talented Jericho artists do their thing? Have you ever produced an image and had no real clue what you were doing? Would you like some tips and tricks for making your next image even better? If the answer is yes, the following entry is for you!

SOFTWARE

Let’s start with software. There are many programs out there from free to very expensive.

         http://www.tritech-computers.com/store2/images/Adobe%20Photoshop%20CS3.jpg

In the world of graphic design, Photoshop is the gold standard. Unfortunately it also carries a price tag that  would buy you a decent gold ring. You can download a Photoshop demo or purchase it here:http://www.adobe.com.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6
In addition to Photoshop, and at a tenth of the cost is Adobe Elements. It’s a fabulous program, and can also be acquired at http://www.adobe.com.

       http://www.devnetsoftware.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/paint-shop-pro-photo-xi.jpg
Paint Shop Pro is also cheaper and is (from what I’ve heard) a great program. Here’s the link: http://www.corel.com/

Free is, of course, always good and there is an option that is powerful and free. Although I’ve never used it, GIMPshop has an excellent reputation and… Free is good. You can get it here: http://www.gimpshop.com/

COMPOSITION

The way an image is laid out is of the utmost importance. The right things in the wrong places makes for images that don’t pop. Every image should have a good focal point. Try to figure out what you’re saying, and what object/image best says it. Reading up on the Rule of Thirds and then applying them can make amateurs look like pros.

When scaling images, one of the most important rules to keep in mind is “ALWAYS SCALE IN PROPORTION”. Especially when scaling people. Holding the shift key in many programs constrains proportions when scaling.

TEXTURE

Jericho’s marketers have appropriately given the design a gritty earthy feel.  While this may look complex, it’s actually pretty to achieve. Using pictures of rusty metal, rough rocks, and other interesting textures will take your designs to the next level. If the program you’re working with has layer modes, try experimenting with different modes other than “Normal”. Overlay and Multiply, often work well, especially with reduced opacity (making the layer more transparent).

FONTS

Fonts can also make or break a design. Choose fonts that have the same feel as the image. There’s nothing worse than creating an image with an edgy feel and slapping Comic Sans on it. Every font has a certain tone. Comic Sans is whimsical and light hearted. Unless you’re doing something somewhat humorous, another choice would be better.

Standard block fonts like Arial and Helvetica, are adequate, but lack that extra something that a more designed font has. For Jericho, grunge (or broken/organic fonts work well). You want to pick something that is cool but readable. Here are some of my favorite Jericho-esque fonts (all are free) some shared with me by other Jericho fans so long ago I don’t recall who:

Bluecake http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/BlueCake.htm
Downcome http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=downcome
Boston Traffic http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Boston_Traffic.htm
Distress http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Distress.htm
321 Impact http://www.dafont.com/321impact.font

BTW- I think the Jericho logo was a custom design, not a standard font. The fonts above have a similar feel.

FORMATTING

For the web, you should work at 72PPI (pixels per inch), using RGB color mode. I’ve discovered that 560 pixels wide fits into the CBS window just about perfectly. Height doesn’t matter.

To avoid pixelization, save your files as high quality JPG. And on a sort of related note, don’t grab small images and scale them up beyond about 130%.

PUBLISHING YOUR IMAGES:

You’ll need to find a place to put your new creations. There are several free services out there. I’ve found www.photobucket.com and www.flickr.com to be easy to use and a great place store your creation.

Various boards allow you to post images in different ways. CBS is the toughest of the boards I visit, to add images to your posts, but it is possible even for the novice.

Here’s how to post on CBS (there a few different ways, this is just one):
You’ll notice when you’re posting a section at the bottom with 2 buttons. Design and HTML.

 design_and_HTML_buttons.jpg picture by rubberpoultry

On photobucket (and flickr I’d imagine) there is a box with various options with code for posting your image. They’ve labeled for various options like email, forums and so on. Copy the code from HTML Code, and paste it in under the HTML tab on the CBS board and then click on the Design tab and your image will appear.

Other forums such as Radio Free Jericho and Jericho Rally Point use the IMG Code for the posting of images. It’s actually much easier on those boards to post images.

—-

This is by far not a comprehensive list of things to consider when designing an image, but I thought a few tips might be helpful.

I think it’s also worth noting that there are many talented artists out there in Jericholand. I am one among many talented others. Every one of the artists I’ve met are very approachable and would likely tell you how to do something they’ve done if you asked.

Remember that we all have to start somewhere, and I’m only able to do what I do because I took the plunge to learn. My early stuff definitely has some (unintentional) rough edges.

Season Season 2 (with new footage) Fan Produced Promo

When the bombs dropped, everything about the world we knew changed. Neighbors became enemies, ordinary citizens became vigilantes, and a once powerful government became fractured and weakened.

In the middle of it all, one small midwestern town became the center stage for a dramatic struggle that is only beginning to play out.

Season 2 of Jericho brings many answers to what is happening in the outside world, as it lands smack dab in the middle of town square. A new flag, a new Government, and a well hidden plot, are the realities of a broken America.

The reconstruction begins 2-12-08 on CBS 10PM ET/PT.

Can’t wait to talk about all the new great stuff with you all!
